RADFORD GYMNAST STARS

Radford University's Christie Epperly, a sophomore from Roanoke's Cave Spring High School, is one of seven at-large gymnasts invited to the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on April 3 in Athens, Ga. Epperly's qualifying score of 37.7625, an average of her top six meets, was second among at-large competitors in the Southeast Region, behind William and Mary's Lynn Dameron. Epperly has been Radford's top all-around performer in 12 meets this season and has set school records on the vault (9.8), the beam (9.7) and in the floor exercise (9.7). Her 9.8 on the vault at Eastern Michigan is the highest score ever by a Radford gymnast in any event.

\ Old Dominion men's basketball coach Oliver Purnell was voted the Division I District 4 Kodak Coach of the Year. The National Association of Basketball Coaches each year selects 15 Division I, eight Division II and eight Division III coaches of the year. These, along with the NCAA and NIT final four coaches, will form a pool from which the national coach of the year will be selected on April 4. Purnell guided the Monarchs to the second round of the NIT, where they fell to Miami (Ohio) 60-58 on Monday.

\ Brett Smith scored six goals and had one assist in one-half of play as Roanoke's men's lacrosse team rolled to a 29-5 victory over Colorado College at Alumni Field in Salem. Smith, a junior attackman, has 13 goals in the past two games for the Maroons (2-1), who are ranked fourth in Division III. Roanoke faces fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday in Salem.
