DOCTORS KEEP BOXER IN COMA

Doctors said they will keep boxer Sergei Artemiev in an induced coma while his swollen brain heals after a weekend fight in Atlantic City, N.J. They can't tell yet if he will recover. Artemiev, who emigrated from Russia three years ago to turn professional, suffered a brain clot and collapsed Sunday night in the 10th round of a bout that had put him "on the doorstep" for a world lightweight title.

Neurosurgeons removed a blood clot pressing on the 24-year-old boxer's brain and inserted a tiny monitor inside his skull late Sunday. Doctors upgraded his condition from critical to serious Tuesday. Continued swelling could cause permanent brain damage or even kill the fighter, Artemiev's physician at Atlantic City Medical Center said.

Promoters announced world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe will fight Jesse Ferguson on May 22 at RFK Stadium in Washington, the first heavyweight title fight in the nation's capital since Joe Louis stopped Buddy Bear on May 23, 1941. Bowe won the title Nov. 13 by a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield. Ferguson, 36, has a 19-9 record with 13 knockouts.
