ALEXANDRIA WEIGHS WARNER INTERVENTION

Alexandria officials, still peeved at Sen. John Warner for failing to oppose a proposed football stadium in the city last year, say they can't understand the senator's intervention in a much smaller matter.

Warner, R-Va., recently wrote to city officials on behalf of a businessman seeking a special permit to operate a grocery store.

"When the city was confronted with a major threat, John Warner refused to get involved, stating this was really a local issue," said City Councilman Kerry Donley, a Democrat.

"Gee whiz, guy, where were you when we needed you? Your definition of local issues seems fairly fluid."

Warner blocked an environmental study that would have helped stall the stadium project because he questioned whether Congress should be involved.

Now Warner has sent a letter to the City Council on behalf of Ransom Gibson, owner of a small store who is squabbling with city officials over his operating permit.
