OBIT GUTIERREZ, HELEN EMILY BAKER
GUTIERREZ, Helen Emily Baker, of 4913 Hunting Hills Ct., Roanoke, died March 24, 1993 after a brief illness. She was a patient at Lewis Gale Hospital. Born January 14, 1903 in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., she was graduated from Dobbs Ferry High School and Marymount College of Tarrytown, N.Y. Employed as a librarian at the New York Public Library from 1924 to 1930, she married Dr. Carlos O. Gutierrez, of New York City in 1931. She resided in Cannonsville, Deposit, Auburn and Painted Post, upstate New York communities in which her husband had practices of general medicine. Dr. Gutierrez died in 1973. She is survived by a sister, Marie Walsh, Hastings On Hudson, N.Y.; two sons, Dr. Carlos E. Gutierrez, Roanoke, John David Gutierrez, Esq., New York City, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Margaret Ann Gutierrez-Novak, Roanoke, Maria Emilie Elkins, Hampton, Alexandra Gutierrez, Ardsley, N.Y. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Carlos and Maria Kovak, both of Roanoke, Therese Cooper, Hampton. Mrs. Gutierrez competed as a young woman in various equestrian events and was active as a Girl Scout leader in Westchester County, N.Y. She assisted her husband in his medical offices during the 1930's and '40's. After moving to the Corning-Painted Post area of New York in 1950, she was active in scouting, Friends of the Library, the Corning Hospital Volunteers, PTA, and other civic organizations. Burial service and mass will be held at John Edwards Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Gutierrez was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests book donations be made to the library of your choice.
