SEAMAN APPRENTICE HILLERY E. LEONARD, son of Hillery E. and Betty A. Leonard of Vinton, recently graduated from Coast Guard recruit training at Cape May, N.J.

Leonard is a 1990 graduate of Roanoke Valley Christian Schools.

\ SENIOR AIRMAN RANDALL S. HODGES, grandson of Walter E. and Louise O. Scott of 32 Hillcrest Park, has arrived for duty at Misawa Air Base, Japan.

Hodges, a law-enforcement specialist, is a 1988 graduate of Berean Christian Academy.

\ AIRMAN WILLIAM B. PAINTER III, son of William B. and Susan B. Painter of 1534 Bali Hai Drive, Vinton, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Painter is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ AIRMAN JOHN N. DYE, son of Jim and Mickey N. Dye of 533 Holiday Road, Vinton, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Dye is a 1990 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ SENIOR AIRMAN PENNY S. MITCHELL, daughter of Dennis R. and Carol S. Mitchell of 2045 Dale Ave., has been named outstanding airman of the year at Los Angeles Air Force Base.

Mitchell, an engineering specialist, is a 1986 graduate of William Byrd High School and a 1988 graduate of Virginia Western Community College.

\ MARINE CPL. WILLIAM D. SANDERS, son of Ericka R. Sanders of 508 Arbutus Ave. S.E., recently reported for duty with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion in Okinawa, Japan.

Sanders is a 1983 graduate of William Fleming High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS BRADLEY A. BLANKENSHIP, son of Charlotte L. Blankenship of 321 10th St., Vinton, and Stephen P. Blankenship of Troutville, has reported for duty aboard the submarine tender USS Simon Lake, based in Norfolk.

Blankenship is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School.

\ CPL. ROBERT W. EDWARDS, son of Mary L. Morris of 816 Sixth St. S.E., has received the Good Conduct Medal, which recognized his service during a three-year period.

Edwards, a 1989 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is assigned with Brigade Service Support Group One, Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

\ CPL. WINSTON G. THURMAN, son of Robert W. Thurman of 1112 Tipton Ave. S.E., has been deployed with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, to participate in two live-fire Combined Arms Exercises at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Thurman is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ COAST GUARD PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS THEODORE A. BRATTON, a 1983 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, has been awarded the Coast Guard Humanitarian Service Medal while serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Chase, based in San Pedro, Calif.

He received the award for extraordinary service while participating in maritime search and rescue, marine environmental protection and national defense and law enforcement missions.

\ PVT. TERESA A. McGEORGE, daughter of Frank E. and Patricia A. McGeorge of 834 Fifth St. S.E., recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

McGeorge is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ COAST GUARD LT. j.g. DONALD R. DYER, son of Donald R. Dyer Sr. of 4645 Long Acre Drive and Karen S. Melton of 916 Caldwell St., was awarded the Coast Guard Humanitarian Service Medal while serving at Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Warrenton, Ore.

Dyer is a 1980 graduate of Staunton River High School and 1984 graduate of Elon College.
