3RD `TURTLES' MOVIE TAKES BOX OFFICE LEAD

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III" shows the caped crime fighters with the shells haven't lost their appeal, taking in $12.1 million and finishing first at the box office in its debut last weekend.

A distant second was "Point of No Return," which stars Bridget Fonda as a government assassin targeted for death. It collected $7.2 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The UFO drama "Fire in the Sky" was third with an estimated $4.1 million take and the rap comedy "CB4" was fourth at $3.9 million.

Clumped together for fifth through eighth place were "Groundhog Day" with $3.6 million, "Falling Down" with $3.5 million, "A Far Off Place" with $3.3 million and "The Crying Game" with $3.3 million.

The Disney films "Homeward Bound" and "Aladdin" rounded out the Top 10 with receipts of $2.3 million and $1.9 million, respectively.

Sunday's estimates, provided by an industry source, are tentative and based on ticket sales and projected sales. Final weekend figures will be released Monday.
