2 FROM GILES SURVIVE BRUSH WITH TRAIN
Two Giles County residents escaped serious injury Wednesday when they were sideswiped by a train. They were treated at Giles Memorial Hospital and charged with trespassing on Norfolk Southern property.Leonard J. Meadows, 34, and Lois W. Bailey, 50, both of Narrows, were standing next to the tracks and were hit as the train traveled west, state Trooper Mike Sargent said.
The engineer said he sounded a whistle but the two pedestrians said they didn't hear the train coming, the trooper said. They told Sargent they were near the tracks because the road had become flooded.
Bob Auman, a NS spokesman, said the incident happened about 5:50 p.m. The train was made up of two locomotive engines and a loaded rail car and was traveling about 30 mph, he said.
Bailey had neck and shoulder injuries and Meadows injured his left arm and a shoulder, Auman said.
