GARY "JOSH" BRUMFIELD II recently was awarded the Eagle badge, the highest award in Scouting.

Brumfield, son of Gary and Jennifer Brumfield of Christiansburg, is a member of Troop 77.

Brumfield earned 21 merit badges, served in leadership positions in the troop and completed an Eagle community project - planning and coordinating construction of a basketball and volleyball court and playground at Trinity Baptist Church in Christiansburg, where Troop 77 meets.

\ RUBY ALTIZER ROBERTS, a Christiansburg poet, has received favorable reviews for her recently published book, The Way It Is."

The book was published during the celebration of Christiansburg's bicentennial.

Roberts, named Virginia's poet laureate in 1950, was recently named poet laureate emeritus by the state General Assembly.

\ ARLENE BELL of Copper Hill captured first prize in the recent Flora Brugh Memorial Meditation Garden Design Contest by the women of Fincastle Presbyterian Church. The contest was open to students of Virginia Western Community College. Bell won $100 for her design.

\ ROBERT W. "BOB" THOMAS will be listed in the 48th edition of Marquis "Who's Who in America." Thomas is president of B&B Media Inc. of Radford, news director of WRAD and Q-102 radio in Radford, co-founded the regional tourism group New River Valley HOSTS and recently was appointed to the board of Southwest Development Financing Inc. to represent Radford.

Thomas has been listed in the publication since 1975.

\ BEN CRAWFORD recently accepted a position at Virginia Tech's Institute for Leadership and Volunteer Development. Crawford served as the executive secretary of Ruritan National, headquartered in Dublin, for almost 13 years.

\ JOHN JENNELLE retired from Litton Poly-Scientific in Blacksburg earlier this year after 34 years of service. Jennelle began his career with the company in 1959 in inspections. He became a mechanical calibration technician in 1987.

\ AL SMITH of Radford has completed the basic course offered by the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, N.C.

\ GARNETTE GRAHAM was crowned valentine queen at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg recently, and WALLACE MURRAY was named valentine king.

Nominations were made by staff members, visitors and resident family members. Then an Clark election was held to select the valentine royalty.

\ DALE V. CLARK of Christiansburg was recently elected to a three-year term as chairman of the New River Valley Workshop board of directors. The workshop operates programs designed to provide training, employment and support services for the area's disabled persons. Clark is the vice president of the First National Bank of Christiansburg and has been on the board the last three years.

Other newly elected officers for the workshop's board are PAUL STEELE, vice chairman, and LYNN DAVIS, secretary-treasurer.

The Mental Health Association of Montgomery County has named its officers for 1993.\ SANDRA WIEDEGREEN will serve as president, SHEILA R. HEATH as president-elect, ROBERT RIVENBARK as vice president, STEVE JACOBS as secretary, MARGOT THOMPSON as treasurer, and MARY ELLEN MOORE as delegate director. JACK VAN CUREN is the immediate past president.

New board members for the association include DIANE BIRCH, CAROYLN BOWER, DOLLIE COTTRILL, ANN CUMMINGS, THERESE GRIMES, DEBBIE HALL, ERMA JONES and CARROLL SMITH.

The association also announced its 1992 awards for service. They were: LEESA MILLER, the Roswell E. Round Award; RUTH LESTER, the Mattie Lou Smusz Award; ED SCHWARTZ, the Distinguished Service Award; VANN RACKLEY, the Mental Health Professional Award; REV. VERNON MILLER, the Gunnar Teilmann Award; and Van Curen, the Charles H. Johnson Award.

The Mountain View Garden Club held its February meeting at the home of MARIE KAPPAS in Blacksburg. The club elected officers at its business meeting: \ MRS. RAY MURLEY, president; H.L. DEMANT, vice president; MRS. JAMES E. ROBERTS, recording secretary; MRS. H.L. ELLER, corresponding secretary; and MRS. HUGH SPRINGER, secretary.

The Southside Garden Club held its February meeting at the home of MRS. R.W. HENDRICKS in Blacksburg. New officers were installed at the meeting: Mrs. Hendricks, president; MRS. R.H. BAKER, vice president; MRS. THOMAS CACECI, treasurer; and MRS. DONALD BLOSS, secretary. Mrs. Hendricks and MRS. R.Q. CANNELL received Blue awards in both artistic design and horticulture.

Southside Garden Club members receiving awards at the March meeting include MRS. R. Q. CANNELL, MRS. R. W. HENDRICKS, MRS. D. LUDWIG, MRS. F.C. MORRIS, MRS. C. A. WITHERSPOON and MRS. R. L. SIMPSON.

The Town and Country Garden club held its February meeting at the home of MRS. JAMES MACKEY. Blacksburg artist NADINE C. ALLEN displayed garden and flower paintings by local artists. New officers were elected at the meeting: MRS. J.W. VIERS, president; MRS. B.C. HORNE, JR, vice president; MRS. C. HARDY LONG, secretary; and MRS. S.D. BARRANCO, treasurer. MRS. E.L. TRIMM and Mrs. Horne were awarded blue ribbons for an assigned arrangement, Heart's Desire.

Nine members of the Arboretum Garden Club attended a ceremony dedicating a hardy maple tree in honor of the Blacksburg club's Golden Anniversary last year. MRS. R.L. HUMBERT read the club motto at the dedication. The tree is part of the South Main Street Beautification Project.

\ JENNY WRENN, daughter of JACK WRENN of Christiansburg, recently won the North Carolina state high school diving championship held at Chapel Hill. Wrenn, 16, had a composite score of 339.85 points for a series of 11 dives on the one-meter board.
