BED AND BREAKFAST WORKSHOP OFFERED

Southwest Virginians interested in starting and operating bed and breakfast inns can get tips at a workshop from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Wytheville Community College Galax Education Center.

"Major manufacturing cutbacks in the cities of Galax and in Grayson, Carroll and Smyth counties have prompted community leaders to explore alternative avenues for economic development," said Rob Edwards, director of the Small Business Development Center at the college.

"The tourism industry has been identified as a potential source of revenue to supplement the declining manufacturing-based revenue. Lodging, then, becomes an issue," he said.

Edwards and Charlotte Reed, coordinator for business development programs at the Economic Development Assistance Center at Virginia Tech, organized the workshop.

Guest speaker at the workshop will be Thomas Potts, extension tourism specialist at Clemson University and author of "Beginning a Bed and Breakfast in South Carolina."

Others leading the workshop are Pam Weaver, professor of hotel, restaurant and institutional management at Virginia Tech; Helen Bray, owner of Bray's Manor B&B in Hillsville; R.D. and Thelma Bray of Boxwood Inn B&B in Wytheville; and Rebecca Ogle, owner of River View B&B in Galax.

The registration fee is $15. People can register by calling 231-5182.
