SALEM SLAMS PATRIOTS IN BASEBALL

Tommy Lee belted a two-run homer and Ron Blevins pitched a three-hit shutout, leading Salem past Patrick Henry 10-0 in the five-inning, non-district baseball opener for both clubs. Tracy Butt had three runs batted in for Salem.

At Northside, Glenvar and Northside battled to a 1-1 tie in a game suspended after six innings because of darkness. Northside's Allen Christian pitched six innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing one unearned run. Glenvar's David Henderson struck out seven and walked none in five innings.

Bobby Warnick scored twice and Jaime Garaent once for Cave Spring in the 3-1 season-opening boys' soccer victory over Roanoke Catholic.

William Fleming opened its boys' soccer season with a 14-0 victory over visiting Alleghany. Kevin Graham had four goals, Van Chao had three and Brian Nelton had two for the Colonels.

At North Cross, the Raiders' baseball team committed five errors and lost to Lynchburg Christian Academy 6-2.

At Glenvar, Dede Aldrich and Tracy Doupnik combined on a four-hitter, leading William Byrd to a 4-1 softball win over the Highlanders in a season-opener.
