AGENCY GETTING HELP, BUT MORE NEEDED

Neva Smith, executive director of Roanoke's housing authority, said the agency has been getting lots of help from the community. The Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees and a slew of other groups have pitched in on efforts to improve public housing.

But Smith said the problems are stubborn and the agency desperately needs more help. Her wish list includes:

Financial donations to cover scholarships to send children to summer camp.

Couches and office furniture to furnish neighborhood action centers that the agency is opening at the city's 11 public housing complexes.

Transportation. That means people who can donate vehicles or volunteer to drive residents to events. The agency has one shuttle van and about 1,500 residents.

Sports equipment.

Volunteers. This especially includes men who can coach sandlot sports teams.

Anyone who wants to make a donation or volunteer can call Anita Lee, the agency's community resources coordinator, at 983-9219.
