FLOOD PUTS COW IN TREE

Intermittent showers filled Western Virginia rivers and creeks to their banks Saturday, and a dead cow's body was trapped in a tree along the New River at Radford.

The cow probably was swept into the rushing stream "up about Snowville," police said.

In the Roanoke Valley, the Weather Service report of an inch of rain seemed like much more, on top of the snows and floods of recent weeks.

The Weather Service posted a flood watch Saturday and predicted patches of light rain overnight. The Roanoke River was expected to crest at about 8.5 feet Saturday night, below the flood stage of 10 feet.

Roanoke area police had scattered reports of stalled cars in low-lying areas.

The heaviest showers of 1.5 inches or more occurred in Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties.
