SALEM BUCS SCORE 1-0 VICTORY

The Salem Buccaneers got a solo home run from Jon Farrell and used strong pitching and defense to shut out a Baltimore Orioles minor-league team 1-0 on Saturday during a spring training baseball game in Florida.

Farrell hit his homer to left field in the bottom of the second inning for the game's only run. Second baseman Chance Sanford went 3-for-3 for Salem, which had five hits and stranded two.

Starter Doorne Weerd went four innings, giving up three hits, striking out one and walking three. Reliever Matt Ruebel pitched four innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five. Sean Evans pitched the final innings for the save; he walked none and struck out none.

The Bucs, charged with one error, helped their pitchers by turning three double plays, twice with a runner on third base. Catcher Angelo Encarnacion threw out two runners attempting to steal second.

The Orioles had four hits and left two on base. They committed one error. - Staff report
