DIVISION II CHAMPION BAKERSFIELD STATE CAPS PERFECT SEASON

Bakersfield State won the NCAA Division II championship and completed an undefeated season by beating Troy State 85-72 Saturday behind 27 points from Tyrone Davis.

The Division II title was the first for a California team and the second for an undefeated team. The Roadrunners (33-0) reached the semifinals twice and the final once in the past three years.

Troy State (27-5), from Alabama, trailed by 10 points in the first half, but Terry McCord made two quick 3-pointers and converted a pair of free throws that cut the deficit to 34-30 at halftime.

The Trojans took the lead briefly, but McCord, who had 23 points and three steals, fouled out with 8:09 left and guard Bryant Johnson followed with 5:32 remaining.
