Sloppy fielding cost VMI as Marshall defeated the Keydets 7-0 in a Southern Conference game at Addington Field in Boyd County, Ky.
VMI (9-12, 2-7 Southern) committed four errors and gave up three bases on balls as the Herd (4-10, 3-6) scored five runs on only one hit in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Marshall pitcher Matt Spade hit a routine grounder that went through the legs of shortstop Dave Grosclose for two runs. VMI centerfielder Warren Williams dropped a fly ball hit by Shane McComas and allowed Childers to score for a 3-0 lead. Spade went to third on a throwing error by catcher Marlin Ikenberry and scored on Williams second error of the inning. Kurt Henzler hit a fielder's choice to bring home McComas.
Spade struck out 12 VMI batters and allowed only six hits. The Keydets had runners at the corners twice with no outs but failed to score.
