MAROONS OVERWHELM GUILFORD 24-3 IN MEN'S LACROSSE

Roanoke College overpowered Guilford 24-3 for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse victory Sunday at Greensboro, N.C.

Brett Smith had five goals to lead the Maroons (3-1), who outshot Guilford 60-15. Roanoke led 8-1 after a quarter, 15-2 at halftime and 19-2 after the third quarter.

Bart Zimmerman added three goals and four assists; and Mark Dibenedetto had two goals and four assists. Joe Keenan and Aaron Sims added two goals each. Adding a goal each for Roanoke were Erik Daly, Colin McGahren, Chris Young, Jerry Caldwell, Phil Conserva, Dan Hynes, Brad Hennegan, Steve Hoffman, Pepper De Turo and Jamie Dreher.

James Kabbash, Mike Bonin and Chris Lang scored for the Quakers (2-4).

At Blacksburg, Virginia Tech handed Hampton its first men's tennis loss of the season, winning 5-2 in non-conference play. The Pirates are 13-1, and the Hokies are 9-2. Tech won two of the three doubles matches and four of six singles matches. Singles winners for the Hokies were No. 2 Dinko Gudelj, No. 3 Marcus Kramer, No. 4 Niels Nielsen and No. 6 Adam Gottfried.

Undefeated Washington and Lee won its fifth consecutive women's lacrosse match, defeating Salisbury State 15-5. The Generals' Lisa Dowling had six goals and two assists for eight points, making her the Generals' all-time points leader with 161 points; Kimberly Bishop, who graduated last year, is second with 156. Dowling needs four goals to tie Bishop for most career goals scored. Angie Carrington scored four goals Sunday, and Nicole Ripken had three. Flossy Owens and Crissy Fellona each scored twice for Salisbury.

At Pipestem, W.Va., Ferrum won the Concord Invitational with a two-day team score of 492 in a men's golf tournament that was shortened to 27 holes because of rain. Washington and Lee was second at 497, followed by Concord at 518 and King's College of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., at 560. Concord's Brian Cooper was the medalist with a 118 total. Ferrum's Stuart Smith was second at 119, W&L's Bo Williams was third at 120 and Ferrum's Matt Jordan and W&L's Gam Mattingly tied for fourth at 123.

At Greenville, S.C., Virginia finished with a 587 total to take third place at the Furman Intercollegiate golf tournament, shortened to 36 holes because of rain. Virginia Tech was 14th.

Clemson won the tournament on the 6,800-yard, par-72 Furman University course with a 582 total, four shots better than North Carolina State. Ohio State's Bobby Sims shot rounds of 70 and 71 and won a one-hole playoff to take medalist honors over teammate Kurt Sanders (72-69).

Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp had a 72 Sunday to finish at 152 and 31st individually. The Hokies' Clayton Friend and Sean Farrell shot 77s and Lewis Conner had a 79.
