VIRGINIA TECH SWEEPS 2 FROM VCU IN BASEBALL

In a baseball season plagued by rain, Virginia Tech made the most of a chance to play on Sunday, sweeping a Metro Conference doubleheader against Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond in Richmond.

The Hokies (12-2 overall, 3-0 Metro) rallied to win the first game 3-2 in eight innings, then won the second game 7-2.

Virginia Commonwealth is 11-10 and 0-3.

Trailing 1-0 in the first game after five innings, Tech went ahead 2-1 in the six, then VCU tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Tech won after Mike Reedy led off the eighth with a walk and Dee Dalton followed with a single. J.R. Hawkins' sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and Bo Durkac's single brought home Reedy; Dalton was thrown out at the plate. Jamie Patteson retired the Rams in order in the bottom of the inning for the victory; he pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings. Dalton, Durkac and David Fitt each had two hits for Tech; Durkac had two RBI. Tech had eight hits; VCU had six.

In the second game, Patteson (3-0) earned his second victory of the day by pitching 2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. The Rams led 2-0 after five innings, but Tech rallied with three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Hawkins and Durkac each had two of Tech's nine hits; Hawkins and Fitt each had two RBI.

At Boyd County, Ky., Marshall University won a Southern Conference doubleheader over VMI (9-14, 2-9) to sweep a three-game weekend baseball series. The Thundering Herd (6-10, 5-6) rallied for a 3-2 victory in the first seven-inning game. In the second game, Marshall scored four runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 12-5 victory. VMI's John Payne hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to give VMI a 4-3 lead. Brent Burke's two-out, two-run single broke a 4-4 tie and put Marshall ahead to stay. Craig Brumfield hit a two-run triple that highlighted the five-run sixth inning.

At Charlottesville, Virginia (10-12, 1-6) upset No. 1-ranked Georgia Tech 3-2 in the first game of an ACC baseball doubleheader, then Georgia Tech (19-4, 2-2) came back to win the second game 7-5 at UVa Field. Virginia plays host to Old Dominion for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Undefeated Washington and Lee won its fifth consecutive women's lacrosse match, defeating Salisbury State 15-5. The Generals' Lisa Dowling had six goals and two assists for eight points, making her the Generals' all-time points leader with 161 points; Kimberly Bishop, who graduated last year, is second with 156. Dowling needs four goals to tie Bishop for most career goals. Angie Carrington scored four goals Sunday, and Nicole Ripken had three. Flossy Owens and Crissy Fellona each scored twice for Salisbury.

At Pipestem, W.Va., Ferrum won the Concord Invitational with a two-day team score of 492 in a men's golf tournament that was shortened to 27 holes because of rain. Washington and Lee was second at 497, followed by Concord at 518 and King's College of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., at 560. Concord's Brian Cooper was the medalist with a 118 total. Ferrum's Stuart Smith was second at 119, W&L's Bo Williams was third at 120 and Ferrum's Matt Jordan and W&L's Gam Mattingly tied for fourth at 123.

At Greenville, S.C., Virginia finished with a 587 total to take third place at the Furman Intercollegiate golf tournament, shortened to 36 holes because of rain. Virginia Tech was 14th. Clemson won the tournament on the 6,800-yard, par-72 Furman University course with a 582 total, four shots better than North Carolina State. Ohio State's Bobby Sims shot rounds of 70 and 71 and won a one-hole playoff to take medalist honors over teammate Kurt Sanders (72-69). Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp had a 72 Sunday to finish at 152 and 31st individually. The Hokies' Clayton Friend and Sean Farrell shot 77s and Lewis Conner had a 79.
