This year Kelly served as a founding member of the Virginia Tech Parents Advisory Board. His daughter, Elizabeth, is a junior English major.

Kelly recently retired from his assignment with the Joint Chiefs. He also had been head of the Army Security Affairs Command.
He was a battalion commander, assistant chief of staff of plans and policy in southern Europe for NATO and director of the Joint Special Operations Agency of the Joint Chiefs.
Since his retirement, Kelly has been an adjunct professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at George Washington University in Washington. He is a consultant to NBC Television and is on the board of ENRON Corp.
Kelly was is a highly decorated veteran. He has received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
