DISINFECTING URGED FOR FLOODED SOURCES

Dr. Margaret Robinson, health director of the New River Health District, advises all homeowners who had springs or drinking water wells covered by recent flood waters to refrain from using water from these sources until these supplies have been throughly cleaned, disinfected and tested.

Wells and springs can be disinfected by pouring a solution of one quart liquid laundry bleach mixed with three gallons of clean water into the spring box or well casing while making sure that the casing and pump lines are wetted by the solution.

Afterward, open all faucets, one at a time, until a chlorine odor is noted. The faucets should then be closed and the treated water allowed to stand in the pipes for 12 hours. The faucets can then be opened and the lines flushed out until all traces of chlorine odor disappear.

Robinson advises anyone with questions to contact the local health department.
