CLINTON WANTS ABORTION-AID BAN REPEALED

President Clinton will ask Congress to repeal a federal law that bans using federal funds to finance abortions for poor women in almost all cases, according to a published report.

The New York Times, in today's editions, quoted White House spokesman George Stephanopoulos as saying Clinton would propose overturning the ban on using Medicaid funds for abortions in his budget request to Congress, expected sometime next week.

Stephanopoulos could not be reached for comment Monday night, but another White House official confirmed to The Associated Press that the budget proposal would be structured to lift the ban of federal financing of abortions.

When campaigning for president, Clinton promised to repeal the Hyde amendment, which prohibits using federal funds for an abortion unless the woman's life is in danger.
