WILDER PUTS FINAL TOUCHES ON '93 BILLS

Gov. Douglas Wilder worked into the night Monday to complete action on legislation passed by the 1993 General Assembly - with the fate of a major day-care reform bill, a package of budget amendments and a plan to permit nighttime chasing of bears among the issues unresolved.

Midnight was the deadline for Wilder to sign or veto bills passed by the assembly, which will reconvene April 7 for a one-day "veto" session to consider bills vetoed or recommended for amendment by Wilder.

Glenn Davidson, Wilder's press secretary, said the governor will announce his vetoes and proposed amendments today.

The governor was expected to recommend changes to one major gun-control bill, which as passed by the legislature would ban the sale of the "Street Sweeper," a rapid-firing shotgun popular with drug dealers. Wilder has indicated he will ask that the "Tec-9," a semiautomatic pistol, be added to the ban.

Wilder also was expected to approve the day-care bill, which would strengthen state regulation of at-home care-providers and would bring church-operated centers under state regulation for the first time since 1979.
