The students will sing the U.S. and Canadian national anthems May 16 before the New York Yankees take the field with the Toronto Blue Jays in New York.
They might need an encore.
The invitation to sing for the Yankees' home game iced the cake for a long-planned cultural field trip to New York.
Choral teacher Charlotte Smith got word Tuesday from Bob Pellegrino, director of special events for the Yankees, after Yankees owner George Steinbrenner gave the OK.
"I was just thrilled," said Smith, who has taught singing at the school for 11 years.
Smith teaches 150 students, and 103 will make the trip along with 31 chaperones. The students have been busy for weeks washing cars, holding craft shows and selling things to raise money.
While in New York the students will see two Broadway plays, "Phantom of the Opera" and "Crazy for You." They will take a bus tour of Little Italy, China Town and Greenwich Village and will visit, among other sites, the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center and Empire State Building.
In the past, Smith said, the choir has taken numerous trips for various choral competitions. This is the first cultural trip, she said.
All the plans had been made and Smith had just about given up on the Yankees' invitation when she got Tuesday's phone call.
