HOTEL-ROAD WIDENING MEETING SCHEDULED

Roanoke city officials will hold a public meeting Thursday night to receive citizens' suggestions on the design and appearance of the Wells Avenue widening project near the Hotel Roanoke.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church at 310 N. Jefferson St.

It will focus on innovative landscape and architectural designs, roadway beautification and other design possibilities for Wells Avenue. Comments and suggestions from the participants will be considered in the final design.

The meeting is sponsored by a coalition of Gainsboro neighborhood groups that includes First Baptist Church, Total Action Against Poverty, Southwest Virginia Community Development Fund and the city.

"We want to use this meeting to show examples of successful and attractive projects in other communities, look at the possibilities and related costs, and try to determine what would work best along Wells Avenue," said Bob Bengtson, Roanoke's traffic engineer.
