BYRD PITCHERS COMBINE TO NO-HIT PATRICK HENRY

Chris Carr and Chris Jones combined to throw a no-hitter as William Byrd blanked Patrick Henry 11-0 in a non-district baseball game Tuesday afternoon at the Terriers' field.

John Bradberry, Kevin Saunders and Shannon Gray had two hits apiece for the Terriers (2-0).

In other high school baseball:

At Blacksburg, Salem (2-0) outslugged Blacksburg 11-2 behind the home runs of Matt Burge, Tom Lee and Ryan Blevins. Burge had a two-run homer in the third, Lee smashed a go-ahead, three-run shot in the fourth and Blevins hit a two-run home run in the sixth. Lee pitched the final four innings for the victory.

At City Stadium in Lynchburg, Kevin Vineyard, Chris Niedzwiecki and Robey Caldwell combined to pitch a one-hitter and struck out 11 as Cave Spring defeated E.C. Glass 6-0 in the non-district opener for both teams.

At Dublin, Lord Botetourt defeated Pulaski County 9-6 in the season opener for both teams. Shannon Williams had two hits and batted in three runs for Lord Botetourt. Teammate Matt Edwards was 5-for-5 with two hits, three walks and two runs.

At Northside, Mark Freeland struck out nine in five innings and Kelly Dampeer drove in two runs with a triple and sacrifice fly as Northside (1-0-1) edged Christiansburg 4-3.

Gordon Howard had a three-run triple, Mark Akers drove in two runs with a pair of hits and Tony Maxey had fourth-inning two-run double as Shawsville (2-1) crushed guest Craig County 12-1. Craig is 0-3.

At North Cross, Aaron Lange pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in five innings as North Cross beat Timberlake Christian of Lynchburg 3-2 in the first game of a Virginia Independent Conference doubleheader. Timberlake won the second game 5-2 despite Ryan Shaver's two-run homer for North Cross (3-2 overall, 3-2 VIC).

\ SOFTBALL: Bobbi Jo Wright fanned 13 batters and defending state Group A champion Glenvar (1-1) exploited two key errors to beat Parry McCluer 6-2 in a Pioneer District-opening game in Buena Vista.

Liz Landry went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six runs batted in, Jackie Hinman went 4-for-4, Lauren Phelan scattered four hits and yielded one earned run as Roanoke Catholic beat Timberlake Christian 12-8.

Northside's Teresa Harris struck out five and walked one and the Vikings exploited a number of errors and walks to beat host William Fleming 21-7 in a non-district season opener.

\ SOCCER: At River's Edge, Justin Thompson scored three goals as Roanoke Catholic routed Massautten Military Academy 7-0 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' match. Catholic (1-1, 1-0) outshot Massanutten 41-2.

At River's Edge, Kevin Niday, Andy McCaskill, Joe Cockfield scored the goals in William Byrd's 3-2 boys' victory over William Fleming. Byrd was playing its opener. Mustafa Kahn and Brian Melton scored for Fleming (1-1).

At Buchanan, Lord Botetourt blanked James River 6-0 in a non-district match. Chris Keaton scored two goals to lead the Cavaliers.

\ TRACK: Jadeen Curtis won the long jump, the high jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the triple jump, and the 300 hurdles as Radford won a dual track meet with host Glenvar. Trish Nervo of Glenvar won the 1,600 and set a Glenvar record in the 3,200 with a time of 12:59. Cathy Welford also set a Glenvar record with a discus toss of 84 feet, 2 inches.

Chad Wallace won the long jump, the 200 meters and the 400, Frank Harrison was victorious in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Ben Mehala won both hurdles as host Glenvar beat Radford 76-51 in a boys' meet. Dave Robinson had a 6-foot-2 high jump for Glenvar.

\ LACROSSE: At Lexington, Robert Worrell scored four goals and assisted on three and Doug Hartog added three goals as Rockbridge County pummeled Cave Spring 14-0 in a non-district match.

Ryan Mills scored four goals and added an assist, and Pendleton Grove had a hat trick and an assist as Patrick Henry routed visiting Salem 12-3. Both teams are 1-1.
