MONARCHS TOAST RAMPAGE ROANOKE VALLEY LOSES 7TH STRAIGHT

The Roanoke Valley Rampage closed 1992 without much to celebrate, losing 12-3 to the Greensboro Monarchs for their 15th consecutive East Coast Hockey League defeat on the road.

Now 4-0 on New Year's Eve, the Monarchs ripped the Rampage with 10 straight goals in the second and third periods and tied a club record for goals in one game.

"You'd think it was the last game of the year," Monarchs coach Jeff Brubaker said.

Wayne Muir had three goals, and Phil Berger and Davis Payne each scored two. Goalie Bill Horn stopped 41 Roanoke Valley shots.

Rampage goalie Ray LeTourneau, who seemed to face the entire Greensboro team alone, gave up seven goals in the third period.

The Monarchs scored 12 goals almost a year ago in a win over Johnstown. The nine-goal margin Thursday was the largest in franchise history.

The loss was the Rampage's seventh in a row. Roanoke Valley has been outscored 58-21 in that span.

The Monarchs came out dumping the puck into the corners and slamming the Rampage players into the boards. The ploy worked as the Monarchs took Roanoke Valley out of an early game plan and set up several scoring opportunities for Greensboro.

Berger scored the first goal on a power play three minutes into the game and barely missed scoring twice more later in the period. Muir's shot from 25 feet came 50 seconds before the period ended and gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.

After the sharp first period, however, Greensboro looked shoddy in the second, allowing two Rampage goals in about a minute.

Daryl Noren and Berger then took over, scoring two goals in less than 30 seconds to restore the two-goal lead.

Andrei Yakovenko's unassisted short-handed goal at 15:12 extended the lead.
