POST 3 TRIO RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIPS
Three baseball players from American Legion Post 3 have been awarded $6,600 worth of scholarships from the Roanoke post for their accomplishments in athletics and academics.The players are Tony Russell, Mark Mitchell and Barry Shelton. Each received a scholarship check for $2,200 at a presentation Wednesday at the Post 3 home.
The scholarships are given annually in memory of Jeff Durham, a former Post 3 South player who was struck and killed by lightning while practicing baseball in 1983.
Russell, who graduated from Cave Spring High School, is a freshman at Notre Dame. Mitchell, a William Byrd graduate, attends Ferrum. Shelton, from Patrick Henry, goes to West Virginia State.
