Stewart Foods files for Chapter 11Stewart Foods Inc., a Norfolk-based producer and distributor of refrigerated sandwiches and other convenience foods, said Thursday it has filed in Norfolk for protection under Chapter 11 of U.S. Bankruptcy law.
The company said bankruptcy protection will allow management to restructure and implement its plans for returning the operations to profitability.
Hess's closes 1 store in Richmond
Hess's Department Stores Inc., an Allentown, Pa.-based retailer operating a store at New River Valley Mall, said it will close one of its three Richmond area stores, at the Shops at Willow Lawn, by March 15, one of six it plans to close nationwide.
The company also is closing or selling one store in Indiana, one in Kentucky and three in Pennsylvania.
Holiday closes stock, financial markets
U.S. stock and financial markets will be closed today for the New Year's Day holiday. The Roanoke Times & World-News will not publish business pages on Saturday. Sunday's Business section will include a special section with year-end summaries for major stock markets and mutual funds.
