W.T. REVELEY, EX-PRESIDENT OF COLLEGE, DIES
W. Taylor Reveley II, president of Hampden-Sydney College for 15 years, died Wednesday at age 75.Reveley, who suffered from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, died at the home of his son, W. Taylor Reveley III, in Richmond. He had lived in Lexington after his retirement.
Reveley, a native of Tennessee, began his association with Hampden-Sydney in 1935, when he arrived on campus as a freshman. He quickly emerged as a student leader, serving as class president his freshman, sophomore and junior years, and as student body president his senior year. He graduated magna cum laude in 1939 and lettered in three sports.
After his graduation, he obtained a bachelor of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. He was called to several pastorates before beginning a long association with Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where he served as chaplain, taught religion and coached football and baseball.
In 1944, he enlisted in the Army, serving as a chaplain until the end of World War II. After the war, he earned a doctorate in religious studies from Duke University and then returned to Rhodes, where he taught and served in various administrative capacities.
He became the 18th president of Hampden-Sydney in 1963, succeeding Thomas Gilmer.
Paul Baker, assistant to the current president, said Reveley's tenure was marked by a doubling of the school's endowment and an increase in the student body from about 500 to 800.
In addition to his son, Reveley is survived by his wife, Marie Gary Eason Reveley; a daughter, Caroline Christian Reveley, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Monday at College Church on the Hampden-Sydney campus. Burial will be in the Union Theological Seminary cemetery, which also is on the college's campus.
