FIRST BABY HITS ROANOKE JUST 2 MINUTES INTO '93
Kayla Delores Mills had an easy lock on the title of first baby of the year. The six-pound, 13-ounce baby girl arrived just two minutes after midnight Jan. 1.The child's mother, 18-year-old Angela Smallwood of Roanoke, says she didn't expect to set any records when she arrived at Community Hospital.
"I was 12 days overdue," she said.
The child's father, Jeffrey L. Mills, said he expected Kayla to be born well before midnight because the couple had arrived at the hospital about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
"I was shocked," he said. Grandparents are Sharon and Curtis Smallwood and James H. Mills Jr. and Frances Campbell, all of Roanoke.
For the honor of having the first baby, Angela Smallwood received a T-shirt that said " '93 Baby."
Mother and baby planned to leave the hospital today. "Everyone is doing fine," she said.
