'92 TRAFFIC DEATHS LOWEST IN YEARS
Fewer people died in traffic wrecks in Virginia as more drivers wore their seat belts and fewer drove while drunk, state authorities said. There had been 829 traffic deaths as of the last day of 1992, compared to 929 in 1991.
The 1992 figure was the lowest since 1956, when 830 people died in traffic wrecks. The high was 1,256 in 1972.
Virginia's improved statistics reflect the public's willingness to buckle up and a less tolerant attitude toward people who drink and drive, said First Sgt. R.M. McCulloch of the Virginia State Police.
