SECTION OF VA. 43 DESIGNATED SCENIC
Nearly 41 miles of Virginia 43 through Bedford and Campbell counties has been designated a scenic byway by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.The segment runs between the Blue Ridge Parkway in Bedford County and the U.S. 29 bypass near Altavista in Campbell County.
Virginia 43 is part of the state primary road system and provides a major north-south link for many communities in Virginia's southern Piedmont region.
That portion of the route recommended for scenic byway status by the Department of Conservation and Recreation runs from the National Park Service's Peaks of Otter recreation area, past Kelso Mill, through Bedford and Bedford County to Altavista.
Virginia 43 is the 68th route to be set aside as a Virginia Byway since 1974. A total of 878.8 miles of primary and secondary roads has been given the special designation.
