NORTHWEST AIRLINES TO CUT 1,000 JOBS
Northwest Airlines said Monday it will lay off more than 1,000 workers, citing "the brutal economic environment of the U.S. airline industry."The latest job cuts by the financially struggling carrier involve 780 flight attendants, 35 full- and 140 part-time ground services workers and 88 reservation sales agents, Northwest said. Those with least seniority will be laid off first. The company employs about 46,000 people.
The staff reductions, effective Jan. 18, won't affect in-flight service, the company said. A spokesman said the airline hopes some of the job cuts will be temporary.
