FERRUM TEEN KILLED PLAYING WITH GUNS

A 17-year-old Ferrum boy died Monday afternoon after he was accidentally shot while playing with guns with his best friend, Franklin County Sheriff's Department authorities said.

Jack Clingenpeel died at his friend's home shortly after a bullet from a .22-caliber revolver struck him in the upper chest near his larynx, Capt. Billy Overton said.

Clingenpeel and the other 17-year-old apparently were horsing around, playing quick-draw with the revolver and a BB gun, Overton said. The two had been friends for years, he said.

Overton declined to release the name of the other teen-ager, whose father was at the Wadesboro residence when the shooting occurred. The accident happened in a basement bedroom.

Overton said the other boy was holding the fully loaded revolver when it went off.

No charges have been placed, Overton said. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
