PULASKI OKS APCO SUBSTATION
Appalachian Power Co. received permission from Pulaski Town Council on Tuesday to build a new electrical substation in the town limits.Council unanimously approved the conditional use permit allowing the work to proceed on Apco property near Edens Distributing Co., as recommended by the town Planning Commission.
The permit included several requirements suggested by the commission, including saving as many trees as possible at the site and putting underground new lines leaving the substation.
In other business, the town has received 96 applications for the job of town manager. Don Holycross will step down from the position later this month to become the first manager for the town of Atlantic Beach, N.C.
The application deadline is Friday afternoon. Holycross and his assistant, Rob Lyons, will screen the applications and present 20 of them to council for further consideration.
Bob Thomas reported on the effort by New River Valley Hosts, which comprises the four counties, one city and six chambers of commerce in the region, to gain state certification for its tourism effort.
Actually, Thomas said, he thought the state accreditation hardly mattered if the region completes all the conditions outlined in the 18-month state tourism program. If that happens, he said, the region's tourism potential will increase in any case.
Thomas said the Hosts group thinks the effort must lead to a permanent tourism organization for the region with a director, just as the region's state industrial certification effort included the organization of the New River Valley Alliance complete with staff to seek new industry.
