TECH PROFESSOR TO GIVE ENGINEERING LECTURE
Malcolm J. McPherson, Massey professor of mining and minerals engineering at Virginia Tech, will present a distinguished professorship lecture on "The Past, Present and Future of Subsurface Environmental Engineering on Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Continuing Education Center Auditorium.Following a family tradition of several generations, McPherson had worked in the coal mines of central England in 1953 before studying mining engineering at the University of Nottingham, where he graduated with first class honors.
In his lecture McPherson will trace how the historical development of mining and other underground excavations has depended on the ability to create and control the atmospheric environment in the subsurface.
"In the 1990s," McPherson said, "computer oriented means of of planning and monitoring give us unprecedented power to control the underground atmosphere, yet we still have losses of life from fires and explosions."
