MAXWELL HOUSE TEAM MAKES BREWER CHIEF
Tim Brewer, who has led NASCAR Winston Cup teams to 53 victories and two championships, has been appointed crew chief for the Maxwell House racing team, officials say.Brewer, 37, began his duties Monday at the Thomasville shop where Fords are prepared for driver Bobby Labonte.
Team owner Bill Davis said he and Labonte, who will run the Winston Cup circuit after competing on the Grand National series, expect to profit immensely from Brewer's 20 years of Winston Cup experience, including a just-completed one-year stint with Bill Elliott.
"When we announced the formation of this team in November, we pledged to become the Team of the 90s," said George Morris, executive vice president of the Maxwell House Coffee Co. "The acquisition of a crew chief with Tim's ability, experience and credentials moves us far ahead of schedule toward that goal."
Brewer teams up with Davis and Labonte after being relieved of his duties after 12 years with Junior Johnson & Associates.
"I see no reason why we can't build our team into a consistent front-runner," Brewer said.
Kirk Shelmerdine, who retired as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt after this past season, reportedly is the top candidate to replace Brewer as Elliott's crew chief.
