PULASKI DRUBS PH 60-46

Eric Webb had 23 points and Chris Foster added 20 as Pulaski County defeated Patrick Henry 60-46 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball game.

The score was 21-21 at halftime, but Pulaski County (5-2 overall, 1-0 RVD) picked up its defensive intensity, created some turnovers and got easier shots to outscore the Patriots 22-10 in the third quarter.

Ben Johnson led Patrick Henry (1-7, 0-1) with 15 points and Moe Preston added 11. \

Salem 77 Blacksburg 73

Salem (5-0) withstood a Blacksburg (1-6) rally to win a non-district game. Craig Turman's 3-pointer pulled the Indians to 74-73 with 40 seconds left. On the other end, Salem's Mark Byington, who had 26 points, was fouled but made only the front end of a one-and-one try to give his team a 75-73 lead. Blacksburg turned the ball over with about eight seconds left and immediately fouled Bryan Monroe, who made both ends of a one-and-one chance to seal the victory. Blacksburg's Jay Safford (30 points) and Salem's Byington dueled in the third quarter. Safford scored 12 of his team's 20 points, and Byington had three 3-pointers and 11 points. \

Northside 69 Christiansburg 34

Kelly Dampeer scored 11 of his 23 points in a big second quarter as the Vikings (7-1) routed the Blue Demons (1-7) in a non-district matchup. Northside (7-1) outscored the Demons 27-12 in the second quarter and took a 19-point halftime lead.

\ Staunton River 77 Liberty 59

MONETA - Eric Flood scored 29 points as the Golden Eagles (5-3, 5-3) flew past the Minutemen (3-5, 3-5) for a Seminole District win. Geoff Zimmerman scored 13 points and Mike Williams added 12 to pace Staunton River (5-3, 5-3).

\ Grayson County 66 Auburn 49

INDEPENDENCE - The meeting of Mountain Empire District unbeatens turned the Blue Devils' way in the second quarter. Grayson County (5-2, 4-0) moved from a tie at 18 with seven straight points and Auburn (6-2, 4-1) never got closer. Mitch Hawks' 20 points led Grayson. Terry Millirons topped the Eagles with 15 points. \

Galax 65 Rocky Gap 62

ROCKY GAP - Tracy Bradshaw's 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer, enabling the Maroon Tide to quell a furious late rally by the winless Eagles in the Mountain Empire District contest. Rocky Gap (0-5, 0-4) trailed 51-33 entering the final quarter, but rallied to 58-57 with two minutes left. The Eagles had a chance to force overtime before Bradshaw's long jumper went awry. Jeff Spells paced Galax (4-1, 3-1) with 24 points. \

Floyd County 79 Bland 57

FLOYD - Jason Light had 22 points and eight rebounds as the Buffaloes (3-1, 3-1) opened a 49-22 halftime lead and coasted to the Mountain Empire District victory. All 15 players saw action for Floyd. Kevin King had a game-high 28 for Bland (2-4, 1-4). \

Fort Chiswell 71 Narrows 60

MAX MEADOWS - Jody Burnett had 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Pioneers (5-2, 3-2) rolled over the Green Wave (3-3, 3-1) for a Mountain Empire District victory. The teams were close through three quarters, but Fort Chiswell pulled out the win by outscoring Narrows 20-12 in the fourth quarter. Chad Fleeman led Narrows (3-3, 3-1) with 29 points, including seven 3-pointers.

\ Tazewell 72 Carroll County 59

HILLSVILLE - The Bulldogs (5-0) outscored the Cavaliers (2-7) by nine points in the second quarter on their way to a non-district victory. Stephen Dalton, who had eight of his 16 points in an 18-18 first quarter for Carroll County, was held to two in the second and none in the fourth. John Wolford had 21 for Carroll. \

Giles 52 Shawsville 49

SHAWSVILLE - Joey Underwood's 3-point attempt with four seconds left to play came up short, allowing the Spartans (2-4, 2-3) to escape with the Mountain Empire District win against the Shawnees (2-6, 1-4). With a minute to play and the score tied at 49, Giles (2-4, 2-3) took the lead on Joey Welton's free throw. After Shawsville missed a 3-pointer, Stephen Stephens sank a layup to put Giles up 52-49. \

Jefferson Forest 58 Appomattox 52

APPOMATTOX - Scott Spencer was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers (4-4, 4-4) earned a Seminole District victory. Spencer had all but two of his 16 points in the fourth for Jefferson Forest.

\ James River 74 Craig County 59

BUCHANAN - Jody Steger scored 19 points as the Knights whipped the Rockets for a Pioneer District win. Romond Waldron paced James River (2-6, 1-0) with 18 points. Robby Huffman led Craig County (4-4, 0-1) with 23 points, including six 3-pointers.
