MONTGOMERY WOMAN OUT OF JAIL AFTER BOND REDUCED

The woman charged with attempting to kill her husband on Christmas Day was released from jail Wednesday after her bond was reduced.

Debra L. Roach, 36, of Thomas Lane in Montgomery County, was charged Tuesday with the attempted murder and malicious wounding of Clarence D. Roach, 37. She also was charged with using a firearm to commit a felony.

Roach was held in the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bond until Wednesday, when her bond was reduced to $90,000. Family members posted the bond and she was released from jail, said Greg Campbell, a Blacksburg lawyer who was assisting a Charlottesville lawyer who represents her.

Clarence Roach was shot once in the head at about 6:30 a.m. on Christmas, investigator R.L. Hamlin of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said. A bullet from a .380-caliber automatic handgun struck the man on the left side of the head beneath the temple.

Debra Roach was not charged until Tuesday because authorities were investigating two different versions of the shooting.

Hamlin said Clarence Roach said he was in bed when his wife came into the bedroom, kneeled beside him, kissed him and told him she loved him, then said she had a surprise for him. He was then shot, Roach told investigators. Debra Roach said her husband had shot himself, Hamlin said.
