BYRD BEATEN IN 3RD OVERTIME

Thad Wade canned a short jumper with 17 seconds left in the third overtime, lifting Fieldale-Collinsville to an 80-76 victory over William Byrd on Wednesday in boys' high school basketball.

Wade's shot gave the Cavaliers a 78-76 lead. After Byrd missed on its trip down the floor, Kerwin Hairston snared the rebound and was fouled with five seconds left. Hairston made both free throws to seal the victory. In other games:

\ Rockbridge County 91, James River 65: At Lexington, Kevin Alestock poured in 22 points as the Wildcats pounded the Knights in a non-district game. Girls

\ Cave Spring 75, Franklin County 44: At Rocky Mount, the visiting Knights surged to a 26-6 first-quarter lead and coasted to a Roanoke Valley District victory over the cold-shooting Eagles.\ Pulaski County 52, Patrick Henry 21: At Dublin, the Cougars (7-2, 3-0) outscored Patrick Henry 11-2 in the first quarter and went on to bury the Patriots (1-7) in the Roanoke Valley District.
