ELECTRIC CANDLES PULLED BY STORE AFTER FATALITY
The electrocution death of a Williamsburg girl has prompted the Rose's chain to pull all electric Christmas candles from its stores. In addition, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission will contact the family of Lauren Fontan, 5, to do an in-depth investigation, spokesman Ken Giles said.
Lauren was killed Dec. 3 when she put a candle into her mouth as her foot touched a radiator, police said. The candle was manufactured by the now-defunct Beacon Electrical Manufacturing Co. of Boston.
An electrician who examined the candle at the request of Lauren's family and the Daily Press of Newport News said it was wired backwards. He said the candle might not have shocked Lauren if it had been properly wired.
