ZONING APPEALS BOARD MEMBERS TO STAY ON
The faces will remain the same on Roanoke's Board of Zoning Appeals for at least one more year.Roanoke City Council voted this week to make an exception to its term limit for boards and commissions. So four of the board's five members will not have to be replaced immediately.
Nearly a decade ago, council barred citizens from serving more than three terms on any board or commission. Council members said they had hoped that would help get more citizens involved in city government.
Since the limit was approved, four members of the zoning appeals board have served three terms: Chairman Elwood Norris, T.E. Roberts, Walter Wheaton and Richard Rife.
Their terms all ended Dec. 31. Without the exception, council would have been forced to replace them.
The term of Bob Copty, the fifth member, also expired at the end of December, but he was eligible for reappointment because he has served only one term.
Unlike it did for other boards and commissions, council never staggered the terms of the zoning appeals board's members. As a result, all ended at the same time.
To keep continuity on the board, council agreed to reappoint them on a staggered basis.
Roberts was reappointed for one year; Norris and Wheaton, two years; and Rife, three years. The four will be replaced when their terms end. Copty also was reappointed to a three-year term.
