TAZEWELL MUSEUM WILL GIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAMS

Historic Crab Orchard Museum will provide new free educational programs to schools in Southwest Virginia during February and March.

The programs are designed for grades four through seven as part of their Virginia history studies.

The cost of the pilot program is being paid by portions of grants from the Beirne Carter Foundation of Richmond and James G. Hanes Memorial Fund of Charlotte, N.C.

Grants from the two private foundations totaling $23,500 were awarded to the museum's overall educational programs, including in-depth tours of the museum taken by students each spring from schools in six counties.

Part of the Carter Foundation grant will pay for a brochure on the museum's history program to go with the educational project, because participating pupils will not be at the museum for guided tours.

Information on the outreach program has gone to principals in Tazewell, Russell, Dickenson and Buchanan counties so teachers can schedule classroom programs. Bland, Wythe and Washington county schools may be able to use the program later.

Jerry Vencill, the museum's interpretation curator, developed the program content.

The 30-minute program includes a videotape, Vencill's stories of Southwest Virginia history and the opportunity for children to handle artifacts and reproductions from museum collections.
