INFANT MORTALITY RATES WORST IN D.C., GEORGIA
The District of Columbia and Georgia had the nation's highest infant mortality rates in 1990, while Maine had the lowest, a new report from the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation found.The national rate was 9.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Infant mortality refers to death within the first year of life. Maine's infant mortality rate of 6.2 was the lowest. It was less than one-third that of the District of Columbia's 20.7, the highest.
Virginia ranked 40th, with 10.2 deaths.
