THE TIPOFF

JAZZ TIME: Composer David Baker will join Victoria Bond, violinist Joe Kennedy Jr. and the Audubon Quartet for Artsounds concerts in Blacksburg and Roanoke.

The group will perform Thursday night at 8 in the Squires Recital Salon of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for Tech students. Call 231-5615 or (800) 843-0332.

On Wednesday, a master class with Baker and the Roanoke City Magnet School Jazz Band will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture in Roanoke, followed by an 8 p.m. concert. Both events are free.

The 15th, the troupe will present the same program at Olin Hall of Roanoke College in Salem. A reception will take place at 6:30, art exhibit at 7:15 and the performance at 8. Tickets are $20, or $10 for students. Call 343-9127.\ \ SPECIAL SHOW: The Roadside Theater will present its popular musical, "South of the Mountain," Thursday night at 7:30 at J.J. Kelly High School auditorium in Wise.

Tickets are $5, with proceeds going to the Miners Family Relief Trust to benefit the families of victims of the recent Southmountain No. 3 mine explosion.

Eight miners were killed and one seriously injured in the Dec. 8 accident.

The concert is sponsored by Camp Bethel of Wise with help from Roadside Theater, based in Norton and in Whitesburg, Ky. Howard Hammersley are on display at the Roanoke Valley History Museum in an exhibit titled "A Photojournalist's War: Life in a World War II Combat Zone."

Hammersley's compelling shots of World War II are but one of his distinctions. He was for many years the photo chief at the Roanoke Times and the World-News. The museum is in Center in the Square in Roanoke.\ \ TAKE A CHANCE: Sandy McAdams, bookstore owner and generally enthusiastic personage from Charlottesville, is directing a program of his own works called "3 1/2 Plays" at the Old Michie Building in Charlottesville.

The plays are "The Prologue," "The Bed," "Late Night at the SPCA" and "Bartleby." Described as "Theater dictatorship at its best," the performances will be tonight through Sunday and Thursday through Jan. 17. Matinees will be Sunday and Jan. 17 at 2. Other shows are at 8.

The trio - of oboe, bassoon and clarinet - has been described as "adventuresome and playful."

Available at the door, tickets are $11 for adults, $7 for students age 18 and under.\ \ LOOK: Mike Seeger and the Banjo will entertain Saturday night at the Prism Coffeehouse in Charlottesville. Seeger is a famed exponent of traditional mountain music.
