ALLEN BACKED BY ROBERTSON

Republican gubernatorial hopeful George Allen staked his claim Thursday to the support of evangelical Christians, picking up the endorsement of Virginia Beach-based religious broadcaster Pat Robertson.

In an interview with Richmond television station WWBT, Robertson praised the former congressman from Charlottesville and said he hopes Allen will be carrying the GOP banner this fall against Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, the likely Democratic candidate.

Robertson said an Allen-Terry campaign would be tough but that Republican prospects could be enhanced by the ongoing disputes between Terry and Gov. Douglas Wilder.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, has become an increasingly important power broker in state Republican politics in recent years.
