DYKE WEIGHS CHALLENGE TO TERRY FOR NOMINATION
Secretary of Education James Dyke said he is considering challenging Attorney General Mary Sue Terry for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination."I realize it is late in the process," Dyke told the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Wednesday. "I also realize somebody has to stand for something. The candidate has to have a message."
Terry is considered the leading contender to win the party's nomination.
Dyke said black leaders are fearful that Terry is not reaching out to issues of concern to the black community.
Gov. Douglas Wilder has been engaged in a highly publicized feud with Terry and has encouraged blacks not to support her.
Because Dyke is a Wilder appointee and is black, some Democrats have expressed concern that Dyke may be a point man for Wilder. Dyke said that's not the case.
