MARION THEATER NAMED TO HISTORIC REGISTER

The Lincoln Theatre, a three-story cinema opened in 1929 and "a rare surviving example of an ornate movie palace," has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

When it was built by Charles C. Lincoln Sr., it was described as the finest theater between Roanoke and Knoxville, Tenn. In 1988, the building was purchased by the Lincoln Theatre Foundation Inc., which plans to restore it as a cultural center for Marion, Smyth County and the surrounding area. The theater was recognized by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources in October.

The National Register is a list of architectural and historic resources recognized as an important part of the nation's heritage. - Staff report
