NORTHSIDE ATTACK THROTTLES RADFORD

A quick start sparked Northside to a 76-54 victory over Radford in a non-district boys' high school basketball game Friday night.

The Vikings (8-1) rolled to a 44-21 halftime lead, using their well-balanced attack to push past the visiting Bobcats.

Walt Derey grabbed 15 rebounds to go with 10 points for Northside, which forced 27 turnovers. Kelly Dampeer had 18 points and Jimmy Porter and Greg Pickeral had 14 each.

Garrett Jones' 20 points and Chris Hairston's 19 led Radford. \

Covington 85

James River 56

COVINGTON - Guard Van Wallace, Timesland's leading scorer, pumped in 28 points as the Cougars (3-5, 1-1) rumbled past the Knights (2-8, 1-1) in a Pioneer District game.

Covington led almost all the way, expanding a 46-34 halftime lead with a 22-10 third-quarter burst.

Troy Thompson paced James River with 13 points, and Romond Waldron and Keith Bryant had 10 each.

Chuck Morris added 13 for Covington. \

Christiansburg 41

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Terriers made 12 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to nail down the non-district victory over the Demons.

Byrd led 26-14 at halftime before Christiansburg (1-8) rallied.

David Robertson scored 12 points to lead Byrd (5-2). John Hairston and Tony Phillips had 10 each for Christiansburg.

Highland 59

MONTEREY - Brad Melton scored 19 points as the Highlanders converted several Rams turnovers into points and pulled away for the Pioneer District victory.

Glenvar (5-3, 2-0) jumped to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. Highland battled back but turned over the ball in several key situations.

Matt Woolwine paced the Highlanders with 18 points, David Robinson scored 12 and Jason Woolwine 10.

Chris Shill led the Rams with 21 points. John Hall had 10 rebounds for Highland (2-4, 0-2). \

Roanoke Valley Christian 39

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers overcame sloppy first-half play with strong third-quarter defense that sparked their running game in the fourth against the Eagles.

Lord Botetourt (4-3) led 30-24 at halftime, but its defense and rebounding were too much for RVC (2-4) in the second half. The Cavalier outscored the Eagles 33-15 in the final two quarters.

Shannon Williams and Billy Arthur each had 12 points for Botetourt. Jeff Cronise added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Gabe Sander paced the Cavs' 51-24 rebounding effort with 14. \

William Fleming 69

Patrick Henry 27 Marqueetta Randolph scored 24 points and the

visiting Colonels (6-2, 1-1) outscored the Patriots 43-10 in the second half to win the Roanoke Valley District game.

The score was 8-8 after one quarter, and Fleming led by nine at halftime before pulling away.

Rashida Abdul-Jabbar added 11 for Fleming.

Shannon Groves led PH (1-8, 0-4) with nine points. \

Brandi Surkamer scored 10 points to lead the homestanding Eagles (4-6, 3-0) to the Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Chiefs. \
