NEWS & ADVANCE EX-EDITOR DIEHL DIES AT AGE 72

Bill Diehl, a former editor at The News & Advance, has died. He was 72.

Diehl collapsed early Thursday morning at his Lynchburg home and was pronounced dead a short time later. The cause of death was not immediately released.

Diehl came to Lynchburg in 1976 to become editorial page editor of what is now known as The News & Daily Advance. In 1982, he began writing an editorial column for the paper.

Diehl left the newspaper in 1983 to accept the Gannett Distinguished Professorship in journalism at Marshall University.

He also provided political commentary and opinion pieces on WSET-TV and taught journalism at Liberty University and Lynchburg College.

His newspaper career stretched back to 1938, when he became a reporter for the Norfolk Ledger-Star, which has since become the Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star. He was sports editor in Norfolk for 10 years and later served as managing editor of the Culpeper Star-Exponent.
