TECH OPENS METRO BY DEFEATING VCU

The Virginia Tech women's basketball team opened its Metro Conference schedule Saturday with a 70-67 victory over Virginia Commonwealth, which is coached by former Tech star Susan Walvius.

Forward Christi Osborne scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Tech (8-3 overall, 1-0 Metro), forward Jenny Root had 11 points and 12 rebounds and reserve Angela Donnell had 13 points and seven rebounds. It was the fifth time this season Root has had 10 or more rebounds.

Tech led 29-25 at halftime, then VCU went ahead 38-32 with 14:55 remaining. The Hokies retook the lead for good at 57-56 with 5:05 remaining. Lisa Leftwich, who scored 14 points, made six of seven free throws in the final 1:56.

Anna Pavlikhina led the Rams (7-5, 0-1) with 22 points. \

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Heather Burge scored six points in a 12-0 run to start the second half as the Cavaliers (10-2, 2-0) pulled away to beat the Blue Devils (8-3, 0-2) in an ACC game.

Heather Burge led Virginia with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Dena Evans scored 17 points with eight assists.

Paula Kennedy scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds as Roanoke routed Bridgewater in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. Kay Caldwell and Cammi Beason added 11 points each for the Maroons (8-1, 5-0). For Bridgewater (3-7, 3-2), Tricia Weatherholtz had 13 points and Katie McDaniel 10. \

CHARLESTON, S.C. - In a Big South Conference game, Shannan Wilkey led all scorers with 18 for the Highlanders, but it wasn't enough as the Bucs won their third game in a row. Charleston Southern (3-4, 1-0) has won as many games this season as it did in the past three years combined. Radford (2-5, 0-1) never led. \

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Denise Ortiz scored 26 points as New Paltz ran past Ferrum (2-7) to advance to the championship game of the North-South tournament at Delaware Valley College. In the other game, host Delaware Valley defeated Hilbert College (N.Y.) 91-58. \
